The information gap

Why can't you stop at just one more episode, or leave a half-read article alone? Psychologist George Loewenstein proposed in 1994 that curiosity is born from a gap: when you notice there's something you don't know but want to, the distance between what you know and what you wish you knew feels almost like a mental itch. The clearer the question and the closer the answer feels, the harder it pulls at you.

It's not just a metaphor. A 2014 study by Gruber, Gelman and Ranganath, published in the journal Neuron, showed that when curiosity switches on, it lights up the same dopamine-driven reward circuits in the brain that respond to food or money. As a bonus, that curious state also boosts memory — we remember not only what we wanted to know, but even irrelevant details that happened to be around at the same time.

This explains a lot of everyday life: why question-shaped headlines hook us more, why a teacher who opens with a mystery holds attention better than one who starts by listing facts, why it's hard to close an app before checking a pending notification. Curiosity isn't a distraction from learning — it's the engine behind it.

In your relationships and your work, you can use this gap on purpose: instead of dumping all the information at once, leave a question open, a "and then what happened?". And in your own head, when something intrigues you, take it seriously — that's your brain asking you for fuel to learn.
