The inner work

Welcome to Phase 3: A true feat

If you've got this far, stop for a second. You must be very proud. If you haven't congratulated yourself yet, do it right now. It's no joke: what you've achieved is a true feat. You've been through the shutting down of the system and the hardest audit of your life, and today you're here, with the terminal switched on again.

At this point, you've surely been able to leave the deep pain behind, but that doesn't mean the pain has completely disappeared. We're at the moment of real rebuilding.

The labyrinth of synchronisation

You must be aware that this phase isn't a straight line; it's more like a labyrinth. You'll see the path takes you from Phase 3 to Phase 2, then you go back to 3.1, maybe you drop to 2.1… and so on until, finally, you manage to stay stable in Phase 3.

This is perhaps the longest stage because leaving the pain behind isn't so simple. Anger, sadness or resentment are likely to appear again. You'll feel them in a milder way than in Phase 2, but they'll be there. Sometimes it'll be hard to detect them because you already have more energy and you think «I should already be fine», but you mustn't beat yourself up over it.

Technical instruction: When those emotions come back, simply become aware. Don't punish yourself. Identify them as remnants of old code, try to get rid of them as fast as possible so you don't get stuck and keep going. Don't let the system stay blocked in Phase 2 again for a long time.

Being reborn: Choosing your Apps

This phase is wonderful because it's a golden opportunity: it's the moment you're reborn. Now it's you, as lead developer, who's going to tell your operating system which «apps» you want to install.

  • You're going to choose which improvement habits you install from scratch.
  • You're going to decide which functions you already had stay because they serve you.
  • You're going to delete forever the processes that hurt you.

It's the moment when you eat well again, sleep better and feel you have more inner space. You start to go out more calmly and to see, at last, «the colour of life».

Recovering the screen's brightness

It's as if your phone's screen suddenly recovered its brightness and colour. At first it'll feel a bit strange; you'd been in «low-power mode» with a black-and-white screen for a long time to survive.

You must give yourself your share of the medal. Even if you don't believe it, your body has done a brutal job; it has fought a tremendous battle so that today you'd be here. Your mind has also held on. You didn't throw in the towel and you managed to get the system to light up again.

The Heart of the System: Self-esteem and Values

Now is the moment to look your foundations in the face: your self-esteem and your values. They're the most important base of this rebirth. Take it seriously, because configuring these parameters well is what will make the chances of going back to Phase 0 or Phase 1 shrink almost completely.

Self-love is the heart of your new operating system. Its functionality is vital:

  • It'll give you permanent updates.
  • It'll optimise your applications automatically.
  • It'll give you the stability needed so that, in the future, you can navigate the more advanced phases without fear.

No one says this phase is simple; in fact, it's the longest, but it's also the most rewarding if you know how to make the most of it.
