Trust: the handshake that opens the connection

At EmotionsDev we always say it: understanding what's happening inside changes how you live. Trust is not naivety or lowering your guard just because. It's the permission your system grants another to stop treating them as a threat and start cooperating. Without it, no relationship—not even the one you have with yourself—holds up.

1. The science of trust

The neuroscientific approach (the «hardware»)

When you trust, your brain releases oxytocin, a hormone that reduces the activity of your amygdala (your alarm center) and lowers the fear of being betrayed.

  • In the classic study by Kosfeld, Heinrichs, Zak, Fischbacher and Fehr (2005), people who received oxytocin trusted sooner and gave more in an economic trust game.
  • Oxytocin doesn't make you credulous: if the other betrays you, the effect disappears. It's trust with memory, not blind faith.

The psychological and evolutionary approach

Robert Plutchik placed trust among the eight basic emotions, right as the opposite of disgust. It makes sense: disgust pushes away, trust brings closer. Evolutionarily, groups that trusted cooperated, and groups that cooperated survived.

2. What it's telling you

Healthy trust is not an all-or-nothing switch. It's a volume you turn up as the other proves to be reliable.

  • Outward: «I can lean on this without having to keep watch».
  • Inward (self-trust): «I can count on myself to hold what comes».

3. How to care for it (without becoming naive or closing yourself off)

  • Trust in doses. Give small permissions and watch if they're respected, instead of betting everything at once.
  • Distinguish the old wound from the present. If an ancient betrayal makes you distrust someone who hasn't failed you, that's memory, not information.
  • Rebuilding takes time. After a breach of trust, it's normal to start again with small permissions. It's not a step back: it's prudence.

The technological metaphor

Trusting is granting access permissions. At first the system asks for a password at each step; when it verifies that the other node is trustworthy, it stops asking and communication flows. But if it detects misuse, it revokes permissions instantly. That's well-managed trust: open, but not unprotected.

Trusting is not being sure they won't fail you. It's deciding that the bond is worth the risk, without losing the ability to revoke access if needed.
