Stories to feel 📖

Classic stories to read together before bed, each one about an emotion. They're timeless tales, told in our own words and with their author at the foot.

Feeling different

The Ugly Duckling

On a farm, a duckling was born different from its siblings: bigger, greyer and clumsier. Everyone laughed at it and pushed it aside, and the poor duckling felt very sad and very lonely.

It decided to leave and spent a very hard winter, hidden and trembling with cold. It thought no one would ever love it.

When spring came, it approached a pond where some beautiful swans were swimming. It feared they would reject it again… but looking at itself in the water it discovered that it too had become a swan. It had never been ugly: it was just a swan among ducks, in the wrong place.

Story by Hans Christian Andersen

To talk about together

Have you ever felt «different»? Being different isn't being less: sometimes you're just growing in your own way.

Frustration and persistence

The Tortoise and the Hare

The hare boasted of being the fastest in the forest and laughed at the slow tortoise. Tired of the mockery, the tortoise challenged it to a race.

The hare shot off and, seeing how far behind it left the tortoise, grew so overconfident that it lay down for a very peaceful nap.

The tortoise, step by step, never stopping, kept going and going… and crossed the finish line while the hare was still asleep. The one who didn't give up won.

To talk about together

When something comes out slow or you get frustrated, remember the tortoise: step by step, you get there too.

Empathy and helping

The Lion and the Mouse

A little mouse accidentally woke up a huge lion. The lion was going to eat it, but the mouse begged: «let me go and one day I'll help you».

The lion laughed —how could something so tiny help him?— but it let it go.

Some time later, the lion fell into hunters' net and roared, unable to escape. The little mouse heard its roars, ran to it and gnawed the ropes until it set it free. The smallest had saved the biggest.

Story by Aesop (classic fable)

To talk about together

No one is too small to help. Who could you help, even if you're little?
