Emotions, age by age

Each stage has its own emotional world. Knowing what's normal at each age takes off pressure and helps you support them better. These are guidelines: every child goes at their own pace.

0–3 years

Babies and first steps

What happens inside

They can't calm themselves yet: they regulate their emotions through you (co-regulation). The tantrums that start around 18 months are normal: their emotional brain is far ahead of the reasoning one.

What they need

Safety, contact, predictable routines and lots of borrowed calm.

Ideas for you

  • Name what they feel even if they don't talk: «you're sleepy», «what a scare».
  • Faced with a tantrum, your calm and your body close first; reasoning doesn't help yet.
  • Stable routines (food, sleep): what's predictable gives them security.

«They're not defying you: they're asking you for help to calm down.»

3–6 years

Preschool

What happens inside

Imagination at full blast: fears appear (the dark, monsters) that are very real to them. They start to name emotions and play roles. They still feel like the centre of the world, and that's normal.

What they need

Validation, play, kind limits and stories to understand what they feel.

Ideas for you

  • Validate the fear without mocking and give them tools (plush toy, dim light).
  • Use play and stories: they learn better playing than with lectures.
  • Clear, loving limits: «you can get angry, not hit».

«Their fears are small to you, huge to them. Be there with them.»

6–9 years

School age

What happens inside

The world widens: friendships, comparison, a sense of justice and first embarrassments. They can now talk about what they feel with more nuance and start to self-regulate better.

What they need

Feeling heard, boosting their self-esteem and help resolving conflicts.

Ideas for you

  • Ask and listen without judging: give them space to tell you about their day.
  • Boost self-esteem for the effort, not just the result.
  • Help them fine-tune: not just «I feel bad», maybe «frustration» or «jealousy».

«Really listening is worth more than having the perfect answer.»

9–12 years

Preteens

What happens inside

Their identity starts to build: the group and fitting in matter a lot, the first screens and social media arrive, and they need more privacy. It's the rehearsal for adolescence.

What they need

Being heard without lectures, limits with explanation and trust.

Ideas for you

  • Talk with them, not at them: ask their opinion and respect it.
  • Accompany screens with kind limits and conversation, not just bans.
  • Keep the door open: available without invading, for when they want to talk.

«They need you to trust in who they're starting to become.»

These are indicative stages, not an exam. If something about your child's development worries you, consult the paediatrician or a child psychologist.
