Babies and first steps
What happens inside
They can't calm themselves yet: they regulate their emotions through you (co-regulation). The tantrums that start around 18 months are normal: their emotional brain is far ahead of the reasoning one.
What they need
Safety, contact, predictable routines and lots of borrowed calm.
Ideas for you
- Name what they feel even if they don't talk: «you're sleepy», «what a scare».
- Faced with a tantrum, your calm and your body close first; reasoning doesn't help yet.
- Stable routines (food, sleep): what's predictable gives them security.
«They're not defying you: they're asking you for help to calm down.»
